UNDAD – by Local Writer SHANE W SMITH

On Saturday 9th of May SHANE W SMITH is coming to join the launch party and meet readers at Impact Comics.

Shane W Smith is a Canberra-based writer with a number of graphic novels under his belt, including PEACEFUL TOMORROWS and THE GAME, both of which were shortlisted for the Aurealis Award for best graphic novel (2013, 2014). These books tell the tale of a small number of people attempting to survive and make sense of their shattered dreams in a galaxy torn apart by civil war.
His newest book, UNDAD, takes place a little closer to home.

Brett Buckley is a mediocre father and husband. When a chance encounter with a filthy hobo renders him suddenly undead, he begins to fear that losing his family could cost him the last of his dwindling humanity. He must work hard to win back their love and respect, all the while trying to figure out his new place in the world, and attempting to reconcile his vegetarian morals with his insatiable hunger for living flesh…

UNDAD is about the challenges of being a husband/father while being (literally) dead inside. It’s more than just another zombie comic; it’s a complex family drama and a rip-roaring zombie gorefest, all with a self-aware streak of dark humour.

The book was funded on Kickstarter late last year, and will be brought to unlife in print by Deeper Meanings Publishing.

Here’s what other people have said about Shane’s previous books:

“One example of a ground breaking submission which sets a new agenda is Shane Smith’s ‘Academaesthetics: how the essay and comic can save each other’ (2007). This brilliant honours submission (from the University of Canberra) is a research article in comic book form.” … “In its genre merging, it is hyper-aware of developments in the creative writing discipline.”
Nigel Krauth

“Shane W Smith’s comic is a really engaging investigation of how comics and essays can work together. I first read it a few years ago but it’s been on my mind lately. This has lingered.” The Comic Spot

“I really want to see more from Shane W. Smith” … “His story Parlour Tricks feels like the beginning of an interesting fantasy epic.”
The Momus Report

“While the setting of the story, and the issues of the civil war on Messar, are interesting in their own ways, it is the well-crafted characters that make The Lesser Evil something special.” GamingWithPants

“The Lesser Evil is a great riff on some classic science fiction themes that cracks along at a great pace. Strong action set pieces are overlaid on some deeper themes of revenge and redemption…”
Stuart Hodge

“It’s like Star Wars met Game of Thrones” … “An intelligent science fiction narrative filled with political intrigue and raw emotion. The art style perfectly conveys the feeling of the galaxy Mr Smith has created and his characters will leave a definite impression. A witty and deep graphic novel that is a must read.”
Blake Thomas

“The Peaceful Tomorrows series is evidently the result of a lot of work, dedication and soaring story arc. Volume 2 stood out for the judges as introducing some great twists and turns to the plot, and strong integration of graphics and words in the storytelling.”
