So, who is Batwoman anyway?

Every media outlet… all of them… this week got excited with the announcement that Aussie model/DJ/VJ/TV Host/actress Ruby Rose would be playing Batwoman on TV… but who is Batwoman?

The current Batwoman is Kate Kane… not to be confused with Kathy Kane, the Batwoman of the 1950s (she kind of disappeared following the rationalisation of the DC Universes in the Crisis on Infinite Earths.)

While she wears the symbol of the bat, and has links to the Gotham City billionaire, Batwoman is very much her own style of vigilante and operates in very different circles most of the time.

Can Aussie Ruby Rose do justice to Kate Kane on the small screen?
We’ll find out by the end of the year!

Kate Kane was introduced in 2006, she is the Jewish daughter of a decorated army colonel, and following the assassination of her mother and sister, Kate was on the way to a fine military career herself.

Until she was outed as gay.

She was discharged from the military academy for refusing to renounce her sexuality, preferring the honour of the truth than to live a lie.

Inspired by Batman, and with the help of her father’s military contacts and resources, Kate set about training and outfitting herself to become a vigilante crimefighter.

Along the way she ends up in relationships with more than one cop (what could possibly go wrong?) stumbles across a weird crime religion that seems to implicate her in a prophecy and tangles with a freak who is obsessed with Alice in Wonderland.

Oh, and the art in the comics is amazing.
