Celebrate and discover the amazing world of comic books on Free Comic Book Day!
Taking place annually on the first Saturday in May, Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book specialty shops around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops!
Are they really free?
Yep!
There will be 50 different titles to choose from and we ask you to limit yourself to four comics to help spread the love around, so take your time and choose wisely.
Is this the first Free Comic Book Day?
No! The first Free Comic Book Day event was held in 2002. In the past, thousands of shops around the world have given away millions of free comic books to interested readers. We’re proud of the continuing success of FCBD and look forward to growing the event each year!
Who’s involved in FCBD?
Free Comic Book Day is administered by a panel representing all parts of the comic book industry: retailers, publishers, suppliers, and Diamond Comic Distributors. Each year, publishers apply to provide comic books at cost to retailers, who in turn give them away for free.
And then of course, there is you! It’s not a party without lots of guests, so bring your family and friends into the city and get some free comics!
What’s the big deal about comic books anyway?
Comic books are an original art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse story lines that capture the imagination of the readers. That’s worth celebrating in our book – we’re proud to be a part of this wonderful medium.
How many comics do I get?
We’re asking you to limit yourself to four comics each… so bring your family and friends and pool your resources. The range of titles is really diverse, head over to www.freecomicbookday.com and look at the list of titles to plan your attack.
Which comics are available?
The range changes every year, all the big publishers produce something. check out the list here.
Can I grab any comic I want?
Free comics will be specially marked – you cannot simply take any comic book from the rack. If in doubt ask one of the imps for help on the day.
Are the comics just for kids?
No way! There are great comics aimed at all members of the family (there’s gonna be a preview of the comic book sequel to Fight Club!)
Will there be comics for kids?
You bet! Simpsons, Pokemon and more! Get in early to maximise your choices (some titles are sure to run out)
Will there be other attractions?
Oh, boy! Yes!
Members of the ACT Comic Meet will be on hand to do free drawings for lucky kids. Stormtroopers from the 501st Legion Southern Cross Garrison will be observing proceedings and skaters from the Canberra Roller Derby League always show up and cause lots of trouble… er… fun.
What time should I start lining up?
The doors open at 9am, how early you get there before that is up to you. But remember, some titles may run out during the day so get in early.
