Every year we dig into the files and extract a list of the best-sellers. This year we’ve broken our list into rough categories:

• All Ages & Young Adult Graphic Novels
• Manga
• General Graphic Novels and trades

Here is the list of General Graphic Novels. This will include all of the usual superhero stuff, Image Comics, and heaps of indy publishers. This includes books that were originally serialised in single issues and books that were originally published in graphic novel format. Hardcovers and Paperbacks are also treated equally here.

It looks like the movies might have helped a few sales, but not nearly as much as Netflix series, podcasts, and just seriously good comics. Saga has dominated the list for 5 years, but there hasn’t been any new Saga comics in eighteen months. Can Saga still register with no new content to push it?

Comics are sometimes hard to categorise, so we’ve combined the All-Ages, Teens, and Young Adult best-sellers into a single list this year. And since most of the bestselling superhero books are in this list, we’ve decided not to do a separate superheroes list this time around.

We also have lists for Manga and General Graphic Novels – including mature readers, and the other superhero titles – so keep an eye out for those.

Collectively, All-Ages, Teens, and Young Adult titles have shown some of the greatest growth in readership for 2019. A great sign of a new generation of comics readers and a peek into the future of the industry.

And check this out! Local artist Jon Sommariva has multiple books in the list including the top seller! Aussie Louie Joyce’s Haphaven also made the list!

this list shows our bestselling non-superhero books. This is by far our biggest selling category. In graphic novel/trade paperback volume form non-superhero titles outsell superhero books by a substantial margin at Impact Comics.

We’re kicking off the new year by looking back at top sellers from 2018.
We crack through a LOT of manga, so let’s see what the big movers were

In Japan comics sell in crazy quantities, and in various formats. Ever since the introduction about 15 years ago of the Tankōbon style volume
to the US market manga has exploded in popularity. These volumes usually feature the art laid out in the original Japanese right-to-left format, and often feature sound effects written in Japanese, giving an experience very close to reading the original work.

The range of stories available blasts across all genres and appeals to a wide range of demographics. Stories cover romance, adventure, horror, drama, comedy and more. In 2018 is seems comedy, action and horror themes were the big winners.

Interestingly, two of the biggest titles, One Punch Man and My Hero Academia both get a lot of mileage from satirising traditional US superhero comics.

It’s an exciting new year of comics! Welcome to 2019!
So we’re going to do some dissecting of top sellers from 2018.

We’re going to kick off with a master list of all of our books. All categories and types of books, graphic novels, manga, BD, trade paperbacks, omnibi, superheroes, indies, non-fiction, and more are all stacked against each other to find out which book sold the most units at our shop in 2018.

Once again Brian K Vaughan provides the big numbers. A comic based on a podcast takes a shot at the title. An adaptation of a classic novel made sure that no superhero titles made it into the top ten.

A handful of manga series forced their way up the charts displacing many popular western titles.

A lot of older stories and number 1 volumes continue to feature high on the list as new readers find old classics in all categories.

The market for The Walking Dead seems to have finally matured with the newer volumes finally outselling the early volumes.

The new The Phantom volumes published by Frew proved to be a major success, outselling most other superhero books.

Aussies Ryan Lindsay, Jon Sommariva, Tom Taylor, and Nicola Scott all have books in our top 100!
